There’s no shortage of proposed names for a huge 50-acre park in Porter Ranch. But who, or what, gets this honor?
Ron Nagai, homeowner, David Balen, board member and former president of the Porter Ranch Neighborhood Council, and Omar Helmand, homeowner, stand near a covered sign for a yet to be named park in Porter Ranch, Wednesday, July 19, 2023. A massive park with a splash pad, tennis court, hiking trails and panoramic views is coming to the San Fernando Valley.
But on Dec. 31, 2018, Englander stepped down from his City Council seat amid an FBI investigation of corruption at City Hall. The previous councilmember for District 12, Greig Smith, temporarily filled the empty seat and suggested that to “honor the request of a loyal steward” of district, the city should still name the vast space Bloom Park. That proposal came to a halt after Englander, in June 2021, went to federal prison and was released in early 2022.
Then the discussion took a new turn after Englander’s successor, City Councilmember John Lee, sent a letter last year to the Board of Recreation and Parks Commissioners asking to name the park afterthe late wife of the late philanthropist Bert Boeckmann, owner of the Galpin Motors dealership. In March, Lee’s office made another request, asking the city to name the park’s pavilion Sesevenga Pavilion in honor of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians.
Councilman Lee said in a statement that he looked forward to working with the commission and the community throughout the naming process. Roger Quintanilla, Lee’s spokesman, wrote in an email that the naming matter is now up to the Board of Recreation and Parks Commissioners, and anyone interested in sharing their thoughts is encouraged to provide public comment before the name is finalized.
“The name of the park that the neighborhood council recommended was the Porter Ranch Community Park,” Balen said, “because it’s a community park for everybody.”
