It is a testament to the character of golfer Jack Nicklaus that this week, he joined those two luminaries as the only Americans ever named honorary citizens of the town of St. Andrews, Scotland.Even apart from its status as the “Home of Golf,” St. Andrews is a magical place.
Not even Woods has matched Nicklaus’s record 18 professional “major” titles , and Woods’s seven runner-up major finishes and four third-places pale in comparison to Nicklaus’s 19 and nine, respectively. Still, it is not merely Nicklaus’s numerical record that makes him worthy of joining Franklin and Nicklaus’s own idol, Jones.
Nicklaus’s devotion to family is legendary, his charitable endeavors immense in scope. And unlike some athletes who seem to revel in making personal adversaries of their competitors, Nicklaus again and again befriended his leading rivals, even when at first the rivals didn’t want to return the sentiment. He still reaches out, at age 82, to players more than half a century younger, encouraging them, congratulating them, and partnering with them in myriad ways.
