A controversy over chickens is causing cracks within Schererville’s Republican Party while the town’s Democratic leadership is calling out a fellow councilman.
If Schererville Town Councilman Caleb Johnson, R-5, can keep chickens on his property — apparently in violation of town code regulating farm animals — then theoretically why can’t a seven-year-old special needs child have a “comfort” chicken as a pet or any resident for that matter, asked Schererville resident Giovanni Veitkus at the Town Council’s Wednesday meeting.
Johnson described the move as “politically motivated.” Schmitt countered that he didn’t know, but suspected, Johnson had chickens until he admitted it at the council meeting, although he hadn’t instructed code enforcement to handle the matter. While the hens are a daily source of fresh eggs for his family, Johnson said they mean much more to his wife and kids.
