Melinda Gates makes a compelling argument that funding is exactly what is needed to address the gender equity issue—and it could be a game-changer for those fighting for equality
Gates, who is co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and founder of the investment firm Pivotal Ventures, outlined her motivation and strategy for the funding in an . In the op-ed, she describes how gender equality has been dramatically underfunded, “...private donors give $9.27 to higher education and $4.85 to the arts for every $1 they give to women’s issues. What’s more, 90 cents of each dollar donors spend on women is going to reproductive health.
Most likely, donations to gender equality are small, because it’s not entirely obvious how dollars can help solve the problem. But, Gates has laid out exactly how funding can create real change. She plans to target these three areas in particular:This is not a small task. From caregiving responsibilities to discrimination and harassment, there are plenty of issues holding women back from professional advancement.
Gates may have just moved us from the idea-generating phase of gender equality to the implementation phase. There’s been a lot of talk on how to solve these gender-related problems, but action has been limited. Gates’ funding could help propel us to the much-needed next phase of achieving gender equity.
An additional benefit is that this idea that funding may help achieve gender parity may spur on future donations, pushing us closer to a solution. Gates writes, “$1 billion is a lot of money, but I also recognize that it’s only a small fraction of what’s necessary.
