A DNA test quickly confirmed that a man detained in Glasgow on Friday evening was not Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès, who has been on the run since 2011.
A picture taken in Paris shows a woman looking at a still frame taken from a surveillance camera, and released on the Italian RAI TV website, of Xavier Dupont de Ligonnes, a man suspected of murdering his family, withdrawing cash from an ATM in Roquebrune-sur-Argens on April 14, 2011. French authorities issued an international arrest warrant on May 10, 2011 for Xavier Dupont de Ligonnes, suspected of murdering his wife and four children before going on the run.
Though France officially banned social classes in the late 1700s during the French Revolution, many families still trace their ancestry back to"noble" beginnings. De Ligonnès was one of them. He would have been a count in France's bygone aristocracy, a fact he reportedly alluded to inin which he called himself part of the country's elite and wrote:"I think I've got a superiority complex, you could call it that.
When police searched the family's house on tips from concerned neighbors, they found a severed leg under the terrace, which eventually led them to the five bodies. But despite de Ligonnès proclamation on suicide, no trace of his body was ever found.
