The 2020 awards will be given out on Feb. 9, almost two weeks earlier than ever before. Here’s how to shave a few more minutes off the ceremony

Do not adjust your calendar. If this year’s Oscars seem to have come early, that’s because they have – historically so, in fact. The Academy moved its ceremony from November to late winter in 1934, and since then it has taken place as late as April 18, 1966, and as early as Feb. 22, 2009. That makes Sunday, Feb. 9 uncharted Oscar territory.

Some Oscar changes are long lasting. It’s been 11 years since the best picture category was expanded to 10 possible nominees, and 91 years since they retired the award for best title writing, which would have been a lock for the “silent” movie The Artist in 2011. We need to stay with the example of this year’s Into the Unknown from Frozen II or Shallow from A Star Is Born, which not only won last year but was the most memorable performance of the broadcast. The rule should be that the nominee has to play within the movie and make sense as such. James Bond themes can be the exception, thanks to their long history in popular music. At last year’s Golden Globes, Jeff Bridges won the Cecil B.
