C’est magnifique, but very different.
Hotel — in Europe, the hotel is literally built over the entrance to Disneyland Paris — and into a magic kingdom that was like a mirror image of the Disney I know: almost exactly the same, but at the same time, very different.
In front me, a gazebo where the flagpole would be in Disneyland, draped with iridescent bunting in celebration of Disneyland Paris’ 30th anniversary this year. To my left, City Hall, and to my right, Main Street Vehicles, a museum of turn-of-the-century cars. And beyond, Main Street U.S.A. and a gleaming pink and blue castle rising up in the distance.
But the Main Street I walked down — mouth agape, my brain barely able to comprehend what I was seeing — wasn’t exactly the Main Street I know and love in Anaheim . There were souvenir shops, there were a fewwindows, there was Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor — but there was also a candy shop filled with Mickey-shaped meringues and guimauves , a walk-up window selling Nutella-filled crepes and, be still my heart, a cart in the hub selling glasses of Disneyland Champagne.
My one day quickly turned into three days, and on each, I liked the resort more and more, probably because I got to know it better. Familiarity breeds comfort, even on another continent, and even when you’re shrunk to the size of a rat and eating dinner on the lid of a jam jar — but more on that last part later.How is Disneyland Paris different than Disneyland?Just like its California counterpart, the Disneyland Paris resort has two parks that share a central plaza.
The ideas of the parks are fundamentally the same: different lands jut out from a hub with a large anchoring landmark. In Parc Disneyland, it’s Sleeping Beauty Castle — which is much bigger than in U.S. Disneyland, and has an astonishingly gorgeous walkthrough that features a soaring atrium and that subterranean dragon .
