The ensemble's concert was a rare chance to hear Carlos Chávez’s Piano Concerto, with pianist Kyle Adam Blair delivering a heroic performance as soloist
The search for the new music director of the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus officially began this past weekend as Ruben Valenzuela led the orchestra in music by Joan Tower, Carlos Chávez and Beethoven.
Since 1986, she has written a series of “Fanfares for the Uncommon Woman” that turn the meaning of Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” upside down. The sixth installment is a smart, energetic curtain-raiser marked by propulsive rhythms, clear harmonies and vibrant textures. Kyle Adam Blair was the brave soul who mastered this piece. The piano part provides little repose for the soloist. In the massive first movement, Blair maneuvered through thickets of counterpoint or hammered away at disjointed accents. The second movement slowed things down considerably. In the opening few minutes, harpist Laura Vaughan-Angelova joined Blair in a piquant, plangent duet.
