When Ottawa 67\u0027s goalie Collin MacKenzie, who is now in camp with the Senators, was two, he got road hockey goalie pads for his birthday.
From a young age, MacKenzie, the 18-year-old Ottawa 67’s goalie who’s in NHL rookie camp with the Senators, was obsessed with hockey goaltenders. Before he could read, he collected hockey cards – the goalies.
“I’ve always been a big dreamer. But I don’t just dream; I like to work for my dreams. I’ve had that kind of mindset since I was a kid.” In the early days, there were the dreaded 6 a.m. practices, shuttled back and forth by his dad and his mom, Caryl. Raz wanted him to learn how to skate so Collin didn’t start playing goalie in minor hockey until he was eight. “It’s been great development the past couple of years,” said MacKenzie. “The first year, I was hurt a lot. I’d never been a kid who got injured. That first year was a learning experience. Last year, I don’t think I started the first six or seven games because they didn’t know what to expect from me. Stopping pucks is about technique, vision, anticipation, hand-eye co-ordination, reflexes and so much more, but there’s also a strong mental aspect. Shrug off the mistakes and move on.
Now, with an opportunity at hand, MacKenzie will keep pushing forward. He’ll play for the 67’s again this season. And from there …
