Coady said it was the Minister in town – Rev. Cecil Webber – who was also the scout leader, who decided it would be a good idea to have small parades in town.
“I used to do a fair amount of woodwork,” Coady said. “I didn’t have many tools to work with but, anyway, I said I would.” “I said ‘I want to make to make a drum.’ He said, ‘what are you going to do with a drum,’” Coady added with a chuckle and as if the conversation happened yesterday. Coady also carved his own drumsticks out of wood and fastened a strap to the drum which fit his height since he was not only the drum creator, but he would also be the drummer in the parades.“I wasn’t much of a painter, so he did the painting,” Coady said, showing off the green accents on the drum which include a yellow scout symbol and two flags – the Union Jack and the Red Ensign – painted by Webber.
“After I took my training in Ontario, I was on the draft to go overseas,” he said, adding the army had a plan for him and it came to fruition while in Halifax awaiting his orders.
