From Wrong Turn to Paranormal Activity, many longstanding horror franchises have lots of installments but only one good movie to their name.
Horror franchises are infamous for lasting much longer than they should, but it's still surprising to see just how many of the genre’s most well-known series only have one good movie to their name. It does not take a lot to keep a horror franchise alive. While a science-fiction or fantasy series might require a large budget for each new installment, horror movies are famously cheap to produce.
8 Wrong Turn The 2003 film Wrong Turn is a solid slice of grisly rural horror. However, the original movie’s six sequels to date are insufferably bleak and bizarrely cartoonish, while the franchise’s 2021 reboot is ludicrously self-serious. This franchise hit its nasty nadir with not one, but two, Wrong Turn movies where no one survives.
5 The Amityville Horror The original The Amityville Horror is better than many critics gave it credit for and remains a surprisingly bleak, downbeat '70s horror film. Upon a rewatch, The Amityville Horror’s influence on The Conjuring and countless other possession movies is still palpable. However, since the Amityville brand is technically in the public domain, the series contains a few weak official sequels and plenty of terrible unofficial entries.
