X screengrab A new video has been released showing the suspect breaching the security checkpoint in just 4 seconds during the shooting at the White House Correspondents Association dinner attended by U.S. President Donald Trump.
On the 30th of last month, the Washington U.S. Attorney Jinin Piro released closed-circuit TV footage of the incident on X. Piro released footage with clearer image quality than the video previously made public by President Trump.
Along with the footage, Piro said there is no evidence that the shooting was an accidental discharge by friendly forces and that the video also shows Allen scouting inside the Hilton Hotel. According to the footage, the suspect, Cole Thomas Allen, 31, sprinted with a firearm from the entrance of the hotel corridor to the security checkpoint.
It took only about 4 seconds for Allen to get past roughly a dozen security personnel and pass through the checkpoint. The precise moment the gun was fired was not clearly shown. The distance from the checkpoint to the stairs leading down to the banquet hall was found to be only about 12m.
That day, U.S. Secret Service Director Shawn Curran said in an interview with Fox News that, based on all the evidence he had seen, the suspect shot a U.S. Secret Service agent with a shotgun at very close range. He stressed that the agent heroically returned fire five times even after being shot in the chest.
Armed with a shotgun and a knife, Allen charged into a security screening area near the White House Correspondents Association dinner at the Washington Hilton on the evening of the 25th and opened fire before being arrested. President Trump and the First Lady were attending the event at the time, and the scene saw an emergency evacuation.
Allen currently faces charges including attempted assassination of the president, transportation of a firearm in furtherance of a felony, and discharge of a firearm during a violent crime. Each count carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
