Dmitry Valuyev, president of Russian America for Democracy in Russia, said that Aleksei Volvchenko was able to leave the country illegally because he was in the military system, not the civilian one. Valuyev declined to disclose details about the deserter's escape but mentioned that it was not the first time someone escaped extradition during a home arrest. Volvchenko claimed to be transferred from Russia to Armenia through Egypt and imprisoned in a military prison. He claimed to have been in a civilian hospital in Egypt, which he used to escape.

Вовченко утверждал, что после депортации в Россию через Египет его передали военной полиции и отправили в военное СИЗО. В Египте у него начались проблемы со спиной, которую он потом лечил несколько месяцев. По словам Вовченко, он был в гражданском госпитале, что позволило ему выбрать момент и «улизнуть».
Он отметил, что у него не забрали загранпаспорт, объяснив это «бардаком в регламенте». Вовченко отправился сначала в Беларусь, а затем — в другую страну. Какую именно, он не уточнил. Вовченко служил во Владикавказе, затем — в армянском Гюмри.
На этой базе срочников под давлением заставили подписать рапорты, что они, возможно, захотят заключить контракт в будущем. За три месяца до демобилизации Вовченко узнал, что он контрактник, попытался уволиться из армии и в итоге сбежал из Армении в США.
