PMD forecasts potentially intense conditions with above-normal rainfall and higher temperatures across several regions of Pakistan.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has released its forecast for the 2025 monsoon season, predicting potentially intense conditions with above-normal rainfall and higher temperatures across several regions of Pakistan.

Director General Meteorological Department, Mahr Sahbzad Khan, stated that slightly above-normal rainfall is anticipated in the central and southern parts of the country, as well as in northeastern Punjab. Conversely, northern areas, northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to experience slightly below-normal rainfall. The forecast also indicates that from July to September, temperatures across the country are expected to be, on average, higher than normal. Specifically, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will likely experience above-normal temperatures. The Meteorological Department has warned that the upper parts of the country could face very serious flooding. There’s also a clear risk of urban flooding in major cities of Sindh, Punjab, Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The public has been advised to stay alert and keep following regular weather updates.Earlier, the National Disaster Management Authority said it had predicted the current heatwave three months ago. A representative from NDMA told the Senate’s Climate Change Committee that above-normal rainfall is expected this monsoon season in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other areas. He also mentioned that climate change causes around four billion dollars in damage to the country every year. NDMA further informed the committee that more rain than usual is expected between June 30 and September 15. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may receive 15 to 30 percent more rain, Punjab 50 to 60 percent more, and Baluchistan could get 70 to 80 percent more rainfall than normal, which is a major increase for the region.
