Pakistan reinforces border amid rising India tensions, defence minister warns of crucial days ahead
Modi’s actions to ‘punish’ Pakistan backfired as Indian aviation industry likely to suffer huge losses ISLAMABAD Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said the country has reinforced its military presence along the Indian border amid heightened tensions following a deadly attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir that killed 26 people, mostly tourists.
In an interview, Asif stated that a potential Indian military incursion appeared “imminent” and that Pakistan had taken strategic decisions in response. However, he later clarified that his remarks were misinterpreted, stressing he did not predict war but rather emphasised the next few days would be “crucial”. India has blamed Pakistan for harbouring the attackers, a claim Pakistan strongly denies. The group initially thought responsible, Kashmir Resistance, has also denied involvement. Pakistan has called for a neutral and transparent investigation into the April 22 attack. Asif noted that Pakistan would only resort to nuclear weapons if it’s “existence was directly threatened”, and reiterated the country’s preparedness to respond to any aggression. “There is absolutely no doubt that danger is looming,” he said, “but I never said anything about its inevitability.” He also confirmed that Pakistan had briefed international partners including Gulf States, China, the United States , and the United Kingdom . China responded by calling for restraint and dialogue, while the US has so far remained disengaged from the situation. In separate interviews with local media, Asif acknowledged that military tensions were high but insisted his comments had been misreported. He clarified that while the risk of conflict was real, it was not certain. “If something has to happen, then it will occur in the next two to four days… otherwise the immediate danger will pass,” he said. Pakistan remains on high alert as both nations continue to exchange strong rhetoric, raising fears of escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
