The best Star Wars stories are those in which heroes' journeys come to a satisfying conclusion. Here are eight occasions when that just didn't happen.

When Star Wars gets its character endings right, they're truly powerful - but sometimes it's clear hero and villain alike deserved a different date. George Lucas launched Star Wars back in 1977, and from the outset it's been clear this saga involved endings as well as beginnings. The trick, of course, is handling those endings well; performing them in a manner that makes them powerful and evocative, memorable and inspirational.

Unfortunately, this had the effect of robbing Padmé Amidala of any sense of agency in her final story. Matters were compounded by Lucas' decision to cut scenes in which Padmé helped form the early Rebel Alliance, thus robbing her of that legacy on the big screen . It's a true shame that an action heroine's story ends in such a passive way.

Mara was originally introduced in Zahn's "Thrawn trilogy," which serves as the loose inspiration for Dave Filoni's current range of Star Wars projects in The Mandalorian era. This has led to intense speculation a canon version of Mara is soon to be introduced.
