Movie sequels often have to recast characters, sometimes because an actor is no longer available, and sometimes because of controversy.
Several movie sequels have had to recast major characters for one reason or another. Sometimes it's because the original actor is busy with another project, doesn't want to do the sequel, or has passed away. Sometimes it's because the filmmakers want to take the character in a different direction. Sometimes a character's age prevents the original actor from reprising their role.
7 Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore Recast Grindelwald For most of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, villain Gellert Grindelwald was in disguise as Graves, portrayed by Colin Farrell. At the end of the film, his true face was revealed, and he was portrayed by Johnny Depp for his final scene and in the sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. However, Depp was replaced with Mads Mikkelsen for the third film, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
For Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Cassie Lang was recast yet again. She's now played by Kathryn Newton. It seems when Cassie got a bigger role, Marvel wanted a bigger name, so went with Newton. She's also starred in Freaky, Big Little Lies, and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. 3 The Girl in the Spider's Web Recast Lisbeth & Mikael The Girl in the Spider's Web tried to pull off the difficult move of being both a sequel and a reboot of a franchise. It's a follow-up to the 2011 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which stars Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist. For the 2018 The Girl in the Spider's Web, Claire Foy was cast as Lisbeth and Sverrir Gudnason was cast as Mikael.
