Even truly great sci-fi movies can flop at the box office, whether they are critically-acclaimed or under-appreciated upon their original release.
Some of the sci-fi genre’s most acclaimed lost millions upon release, as did a lot of under-appreciated cult classics that took years to catch on. The sci-fi genre is not an easy filmmaking mode for studios to capitalize on. For every ambitious low-budget sleeper hit like Mad Max: The Road Warrior, there is a colossal financial failure like Waterworld.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT 8 Blade Runner Released in 1982, Blade Runner was director Ridley Scott’s ambitious adaption of Philip K Dick’s iconic sci-fi noir novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Blade Runner sees Harrison Ford’s cynical cop Rick Deckard sent to hunt down rebellious droids in the rain-soaked dystopia of 2019 Los Angeles, and its convoluted plot proved too labyrinthine for many critics upon release.
6 Children of Men Director Alfonso Carol’s Children of Men is a haunting story that was singled out for critical praise upon its 2006 premiere. Set in a world where infertility has decimated the human population for almost two decades, Children of Men’s plot sees Clive Owen’s beleaguered bureaucrat ferry a woman who has miraculously fallen pregnant to safety.
4 Starship Troopers Paul Verhoeven’s satirical Starship Troopers was an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Robert Heinlein. Starship Troopers told the tale of a few all-American kids enlisting to do their part in an interstellar war against a race of alien bugs but, unlike the source novel, the movie adaptation offered a scathing indictment of the military. Verhoeven’s sci-fi satire was too subtle for many moviegoers and failed to repeat the success of his earlier Robocop.
