Interim City Manager reneged on promise to have national search for director of Office of Police OversightSeveral Austin City Council Members are calling out Interim City Manager Jesus Garza over how he handled selecting the new director of the Office of Police Oversight.Council Member Vanessa Fuentes says since this is a high-profile position, it deserves a great deal of vetting and transparency to find the right candidate.
When the City of Austin announced Monday that Gail McCant had been selected to permanently lead the office of police oversight, District 2 Councilwoman Vanessa Fuentes says the news came as a surprise to her and her colleagues. With 25 years' experience in enforcing civil, human, employee, and housing rights Fuentes believes she's qualified to handle supervising the Austin Police Department. She’s just not pleased with how interim City Manager Jesus Garza handled the situation.Fuentes along with council members Chito Vela, José Velásquez, Ryan Alter, and Zohaib "Zo" Qadri sent a letter to Garza asking for answers.
Garza also recognized that Monday’s announcement may have caught council members off guard and apologized.
