A 77-year-old woman has been charged with manslaughter following the death of a newborn infant in Ladysmith in 2023. The incident began on December 27, 2023, when the newborn was delivered unresponsive at a home in Ladysmith. “Despite life-saving efforts from BC Emergency Health Services (BC EHS) and subsequent palliative care, the infant died on January 6, 2024,” said RCMP in a release Tuesday.
The woman, identified as Gloria Lemay, is believed to have been involved in the “birth process” that led to the infant’s injuries and death, according to RCMP.Mounties say their investigation was “complex” and involved the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the BC Coroners Service, and the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).warning that Lemay was not a registered midwife and that she was under a court order not to perform any services related to midwifery, but that she continued “to hold herself out as a birth attendant.” In February 2000, the B.C. supreme court handed her an order that permanently prohibited her from using the title “midwife” or any name that implies she was registered with the college – such as birth attendant, birth keeper or traditional midwife, according to the BCCNM. The BCCNM added that it received a court order to search Lemay’s home on January 30, 2024, and that the college did so while accompanied by the RCMP
