Gloria Lemay, 77, faces manslaughter charges after a baby born at her home in December 2023 died in January 2024. This isn't Lemay's first controversy involving home births.
77-year-old Gloria Lemay is accused of manslaughter in the death of an infant delivered at a home in December 2023. According to Ladysmith RCMP, the baby was born unresponsive on December 27, 2023, at a private home, and died on January 6, 2024. Lemay was involved in the birth and her actions are believed to have led to the child's injuries and death. This is not Lemay's first controversy related to home births.
In 1985, she and a colleague were convicted of criminal negligence in the death of a baby boy in Vancouver, though the conviction was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Canada. In 1995, she was fined for refusing to cooperate with a coroners inquest after assisting in a home birth that resulted in a baby's death from e-coli. A permanent court order issued in 2000 prohibited Lemay from performing midwifery services, but the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) issued a public advisory in January 2024 warning that she has continued to offer midwifery services despite the ban. The college, along with RCMP, conducted a search of Lemay's home in January 2024 seeking evidence of unauthorized midwifery practice. Lemay's website describes her as a 'childbirth activist' and criticizes government regulation of midwifery
