Verdict reserved on admissibility of plea contesting NAB amendment allowing 40-day remand

LAHORE – The Lahore High Court has reserved its decision regarding the admissibility of a petition challenging the induction of an amendment to the NAB laws through the presidential ordinance which allows the extension of the remand period from 14 to 40 days.

Justice Shujaat Ali Khan of the LHC took up the petition, filed by citizen Muneer Ahmed, on Thursday. At the outset of the proceedings, the counsel for the petitioner requested the court to issue an injunction against the presidential ordinance. On May 27, the ruling PML-N amended the NAB ordinance, extending the remand period for an accused from two weeks to 40 days. Acting President Yousuf Raza Gilani approved the NAB Ordinance 2024 into law, assuming the role of acting president while Asif Ali Zardari was on a private visit to Dubai. The petitioner argues that the ordinance was promulgated only for one political party, adding that the legislation should have been enacted through parliament.
