This is nothing new for the region.
“Overnight, portions of the Central Coast, South Bay and Central Valley were particularly hard hit with wind, rain and more than 100 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes,” a Jan. 10 PG&E news release said. Outages in the Bay Area have “significantly” spiked due to these lightning strikes, as well as 70 mph gusts, they wrote in an email update.
As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, 75,808 Bay Area customers are in the dark, with the leading number of outages in the South Bay and Peninsula.
