India bans 16 Pakistani YouTube channels after Kashmir attack
NEW DELHI The Indian government has banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels, including major news outlets and individual creators, citing ‘national security concerns’ and ‘the spread of provocative and communally sensitive content’ following the recent Pahalgam attack in the Indian-occupied Kashmir.
The move, made on the recommendation of the Ministry of Home Affairs, affects prominent broadcasters such as Dawn News, Geo News, ARY News, Samaa TV, and Bol News, as well as the personal channels of journalists like Asma Shirazi, Umar Cheema, and Irshad Bhatti. The April 22 attack in Pahalgam killed 26 people, mostly tourists, and was among the deadliest in the region in decades. India has hinted at cross-border links without presenting evidence, while Pakistan has denied involvement and called for an independent investigation. The banned channels, which had a combined subscriber base of over 60 million, were accused of disseminating misinformation and targeting Indian security agencies. Critics, however, argue the bans reflect an increasing intolerance toward dissenting narratives, particularly on Kashmir. Tensions between India and Pakistan remain high, with both sides implementing retaliatory measures, including restrictions on official social media accounts and cross-border travel.
