, a licensed psychologist and founder of Flourish, a private psychology practice in Brooklyn, often guides her clients through what’s called a “container exercise," in which they visualize and describe a hypothetical container to put distressing thoughts and feelings into, at the end of emotionally taxing appointments. “It’s a transitional minute to think about how they’re going to adjust back to the world out there,” she explains.
Fox says many of her clients create their own pre- and post-therapy rituals, things they do to prepare for the session or decompress after, “like stretching before or after a workout.” Some clients arrive early to appointments, using the waiting room as a place to reflect and focus by writing down what they want to address in the session, or reading a book they’ve selected to supplement.
Whether it’s a way to psych yourself up for appointments, reward yourself after tough sessions, or create a pleasant transition between work and therapy, ritual makes the process of being in treatment a little easier.
