Ontario Provincial Police say they have arrested and charged seven people in connection with fraudulent activity involving driver exams in Ontario. In a news release Monday, the OPP the charges resulted from an investigation into "suspected irregularities" in the driver examination process for G class licences in Ontario. Police said the investigation looked at allegations that bribes were offered in exchange for "favourable consideration" of specific applicants during testing. The accused, ranging in age from 43 to 65, have been charged with such offences as secret commissions, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, breach of trust and money laundering.
They face a combined total of 25 Criminal Code offences. The Serious Fraud Office , a joint initiative of the OPP and the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General focused on prosecuting complex fraud and financial crimes, began the probe in September 2024.
"The OPP is committed to keeping Ontario safe," Det. Supt. Jennifer Spurrell, of the OPP Financial Crime Services, said in the release.
"This investigation reflects our ongoing responsibility to protect the public and ensure that systems designed to keep people safe are not undermined. " The seven, who have been released from custody, are due to appear in court Wednesday. Three of the accused are from Toronto, two are from Brampton, one is from Maple, Ont. and one is from Mississauga.
