Japan's automotive consumers took a liking to what two American cars
Chrysler Neon
The Chrysler Neon provides a window into what can happen when a company takes a different tact when presenting a vehicle to a different market. In America, was intended to hold up the low end of the market, but by the time it had reached the end of its run in Japan, the compact sedan was presented with a full load of options and a leather interior.
Chrysler tried its best with the right-hand drive Neon from 1996 to 2001. Sales, however, eluded the car, and again it was a situation similar to that of the Toyota Cavalier: Japanese options in the same segment were head and shoulders better at meeting the needs of buyers. It probably also didn't help thatis a vehicle that seemingly should have worked overseas. After all, Jeep continues to successfully market a mish-mash of SUVs in Japan to this day.
Primarily, it was a question of branding. Globally, the Jeep badge is associated with rugged adventure, while in Japan, Ford was more typically linked to mass-market cars of questionable quality.
. It relied on a mix of right-hand and left-hand drive models, depending on the generation, but Ford's 4x4 failed to catch on past a token number of sales.Japan's car culture is one of the strongest in the world, and it's chosen more than a few surprising champions from the American automotive diaspora.
