A 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook the coasts of Mexico, according to the USGS. Alarms for the quake came less than an hour after quake alarms warbled in a nationwide earthquake simulation marking major quakes that struck on the same date in 1985 and 2017.
The quake hit around 11:05 a.m. at a depth of about nine miles, according to the USGS, which initially put the magnitude at 7.5. The quake was centered about 23 miles southeast of Aquila near the boundary of Colima and Michoacán states.
The shaking set off an earthquake alarm in the capital. Alarms for the new quake came less than an hour after a quake alarms warbled in a nationwide earthquake simulation marking major quakes that struck on the same date in 1985 and 2017.President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said via Twitter that the secretary of the navy told him one person was killed in the port city of Manzanillo, Colima when a wall at a mall collapsed.
Michoacan's Public Security department said there were no immediate reports of significant damage in that state beyond some cracks in buildings in the town of Coalcoman. Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum also tweeted that there were no reports of damage in the capital.
