The quake, which was relatively shallow at a depth of about 10 kilometers, caused significant damage in the region, with about 1,000 houses damaged and 130 others injured. BEIJING — A strong earthquake killed at least 95 people in Tibet on Tuesday and left many others trapped as dozens of aftershocks shook the high-altitude region of western China and across the border in Nepal .

State media reported that about 1,000 houses were damaged and 62 people were injured in addition to the deaths, citing the Tibet earthquake relief headquarters. About 50 aftershocks were recorded in the three hours after the earthquake, and the Mount Everest scenic area on the Chinese side was closed after the quake.

CCTV said there are a handful of communities within 5 kilometers of the epicenter, which was 380 kilometers from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and about 23 kilometers from the region’s second-largest city of Shigatse, known as Xigaze in Chinese. The National Emergency Operation Center in Kathmandu said people in northeastern Nepal strongly felt the earthquake but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to houses.
