ISLAMABAD: During the 8th Pakistan-EU Strategic Dialogue held in Islamabad, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation into a comprehensive, mutually beneficial relationship.
The event was led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas. Dar emphasized that this dialogue is the most significant institutional platform between Pakistan and the EU, noting the recent short interval since the last review in Brussels. They examined progress under the 2019 Strategic Engagement Plan, focusing on trade, investment, human rights, migration, security, and counter-terrorism.
Pakistan highlighted the importance of EU as a major trade partner and praised the GSP+ framework for fostering a “win-win” trade environment. Discussions also covered regional and global issues, including the US-Iran conflict, Afghanistan, and Middle Eastern stability. Dar appreciated EU support for Pakistan’s mediation efforts in the Iran-US tensions and voiced concerns over Indian aggression, reaffirming Pakistan’s stance on resolving Jammu and Kashmir according to UN resolutions.
Dar also noted that recent legal rulings on the Indus Waters Treaty validate Pakistan’s position, citing limitations on India’s water control on western rivers. On security, he pointed to threats emanating from Afghan soil and stressed the importance of multilateralism and UN adherence. Kaja Kallas described Pakistan as a major regional influence and a key partner for the EU, which remains its largest export destination.
She commended Pakistan’s mediation efforts with Iran and emphasized Pakistan’s right to defend itself, aligning with international law. Both leaders expressed their intent to enhance cooperation in trade, climate resilience, digital infrastructure, clean energy, migration, and educational exchanges including the Erasmus Mundus program, where Pakistan ranks highest. Dar highlighted that the EU Strategic Vision could serve as a foundation for strengthening political and sectoral ties, building on previous agreements.
He reiterated Pakistan’s appreciation for EU leadership and support, especially during recent regional conflicts, and extended an invitation for the EU President to visit Pakistan. Kallas praised Pakistan’s role in facilitating US-Iran negotiations, which helped avoid escalation and rising global energy and fertilizer costs. Both sides committed to advancing relations further by 2026, emphasizing a forward-looking approach to their partnership.
