Before any player becomes a member of the 67’s, there’s a long process of scouting, whether they are drafted or acquired via trade. Egert’s scouting staff of nine has seen little turnover and has allowed them to familiarize themselves with what the club wants.
For the Barber Poles’ staff, each pick is worth the effort; whether it’s the first-overall pick, or it’s the last pick of the draft. Boyd says that drafting isn’t an exact science, but you never know when you could unearth a gem in the later rounds. On the hockey side, Strength and Conditioning Coaches Sean Young and Derek Froats work closely with players to ensure they are physically at their best. The player development team, consisting of Evan Brownrigg, Andrew Dilworth, and Joel Washkurak, helps players reach their potential. Chris Hamilton and Cooper Gage take care of the player’s equipment, and various other tasks around the locker room, but still, there’s more.
“When you’re in the dog days of winter, and the grind of a long season, you’re a family, you have those bonds,” Egert said. Since Boyd and Egert joined the Barber Poles, there has been a focus placed on player development. That is by design, and so far, has paid off for the club. “I’m excited when I’m out in the rinks and I’m watching our players,” Boyd said. “There’s a lot of good players who aren’t playing for us [right now], so our scouts can be proud of what they are doing.”Article content
