Corticosteroid use can make it more difficult to control your diabetes, even if you were previously able to handle it just fine. And if you don’t have diabetes, using corticosteroids for a long period of time can lead to what’s known as steroid-induced diabetes or steroid-induced hyperglycemia, which is when someone without a history of diabetes develops the condition due to steroids.
If you’re on corticosteroids and you find that you’re having symptoms of high blood sugar, like fatigue,, and increased thirst, talk to your doctor to see if you can switch to an effective medication without this side effect. Usually your blood sugar will eventually return to normal after you stop taking the drugs, Dr. Wallia says. Even if you can’t stop taking the corticosteroids, your doctor can help you come up with a treatment plan for the high blood sugar.
