$550,000 to $15 million: Cost of replacing John Tory as Toronto mayor could get steep via nationalpost
It will be an unprecedented election, although there was a brief period of time when Rob Ford looked poised to have to run in a byelection to hang on as mayor in 2012.
In the Ford years, then-budget chair Mike Del Grande estimated a byelection would cost $15 million, about double what councillors expected it to cost.Article contentIn 2018, $11.9 million was spent running the election. The city said Thursday that the 2022 election — which saw Tory win re-election in October — cost $14.5 million.
“A cost estimate is not available at this time as planning for the by-election is still underway,” said an email from Erin George, a spokesperson with the city of Toronto, regarding the Tory byelection. Wiseman, while noting there aren’t figures on what this might cost, suggested it will require a lot more to get done than just running a council election in one ward. The National Post sought comment from Coun. Gary Crawford, the budget committee chair in 2023, about how much electing Tory’s replacement might cost. Crawford’s office said it “could not access” that figure.
