Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever could have been darker and, ultimately, better had some of the original ideas hadn't been scrapped or changed.
Batman Forever is the stand-alone sequel to Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, and it was so different from Burton’s Batman films that it doesn’t feel like part of the same universe, but had some of the original ideas for it been kept, Batman Forever could have been very different but also better. Although Batman Returns was well-received by critics, its darker tone and story didn’t appeal to the audience at the time of its release, leading Warner Bros. to change its plan for future Batman movies.
One scene in particular, set inside Lyle’s apartment, described the place as “decorated in traditional serial killer blankets over the windows, blocking the light”, stacks of unopened mail, unread newspapers, the dining room table covered with wires and parts of computers, and a wall-sized poster of Bruce Wayne, where Lyle painted green target circles on his forehead.
3 Batman Forever Could Have Seen The Return of Catwoman Another idea that was scrapped when Goldsman rewrote the script for Batman Forever was the return of Catwoman, played by Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns. Tim Burton’s version of Selina Kyle was the lonely, shy, and frustrated secretary of Max Schreck, who after she accidentally discovered her boss’ plot to build a power plant to steal Gotham’s electricity, was pushed out the window of his top-story office by Shreck himself.
