Danny Austin takes a look at five things Craig Conroy should prioritize first after becoming General Manager of the Calgary Flames.
Getting the right person in-place may very well be the defining decision of the early part of Conroy’s tenure as GM, so the importance of getting this right really can’t be overstated. If you’re a Flames fan, Elias Lindholm’s post-season press conference wasn’t exactly re-assuring. When he was asked about whether he’d consider re-signing longterm with the Flames when his contract runs out next summer, Lindholm basically just repeated how he’s got “one more year” a couple times.
Presumably, Conroy will want to try to talk Lindholm into staying, but if that can’t happen, what then? Do you trade him before the draft? Wait until the trade deadline? Hope a great season convinces him to stick around?Flames management was adamant at the end of the year that they believed their team was close to contending. They want to run it back in 2023-’24, it seems.
Mikael Backlund, Tyler Toffoli, Noah Hanifin and Chris Tanev are all going to be unrestricted free-agents next summer. All could likely yield a decent return on the trade market but are also expected to be core pieces for the Flames again next season should they choose to keep them all.Article content
Behind Markstrom, though, it’s reasonable to wonder what happens. Dustin Wolf was the AHL’s Most Valuable Player and set all sorts of records. It’s easy to make the argument that the next stage in his development should involve him being in the NHL.Article content
