This comes three years after the George Floyd protests, during which Austin police officers deployed less-lethal methods to control protesters. Multiple people suffered injuries.

This comes three years after the George Floyd protests, during which Austin police officersThe executive director of the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas, or CLEAT, spoke out against the cases of two more Austin police officers. “We condemn these political add-on prosecutions of Austin officers who were following direct orders from their superiors and following their training in facing violent attacks on government buildings and interstate traffic,” wrote Charley Wilkison.

Wednesday, the Austin Police Association emailed its members and said that after three cases against Austin police officers were presented last week, two more were presented this week.

Harris said the bill allows law enforcement to be reckless. “This bill [provides a] defense of prosecution for reckless use of these weapons, meaning those officers that have already been indicted and those in the future will see fit to recklessly use these weapons,” he said. The Travis County District Attorney’s Office said this in a statement: “It is unfortunate that instead of honoring the rule of law and focusing on keeping our community safe, the Austin Police Association has chosen yet again to sow discontent and conflict because they are unhappy with oversight decisions made by our community.”

When I asked for comment today regarding the grand jury cases, the office declined, but the fight over the use of less-lethal force is likely not over. “This is the best interest for public safety,” said Rep. Frazier in May.We do not know who the five officers are, nor the charges against them right now. But in that legislative testimony two weeks ago about making the bill retroactive, the representative said the statute of limitations on deadly conduct is three years and two year for assault.
