Here are 5 mistakes students make when using email to a network (and how to avoiding making them):
). To help provide more insight, I share tips from managers and executives at blue-chip firms regarding the mistakes that students make and how to avoid these mistakes.Expecting the executive to accommodate the student’s schedule
. When asking for somebody else’s time—a favor—it is imperative to understand that you have to accommodate their schedule. It would be inappropriate, for example, to reach out and ask if somebody is available on Monday at 4 P.M. or Thursday at 2 P.M. While that may be exceptionally convenient for you, it is most likely that the executive is booked during those times—in fact, they may be booked for weeks into the future.
Another manager indicated that it “is extremely easy to tell during a call who has done their research on the company, on me and my background, and come prepped with thoughtful questions. It's also easy to spot the opposite situation — when they are asking very basic and generic questions they could have answered themselves by googling the company.”: Effective networking prep takes time and commitment. Before writing an email , do your homework.
While these may all seem like common sense, experience suggests otherwise. Take a minute to digest this advice. Then, on your next networking call, you will be ready to demonstrate that you are an aspiring professional who respects and appreciates the precious gift of the executive's time and who appropriately prioritizes, prepares, and plans for it.
