A 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Sechelt Friday afternoon, with many Vancouver Islanders feeling tremors as far away as Victoria.

The seismograph at the Pacific Geoscience Centre when the 2.3-magnitude earthquake struck seven kilometres north of Langford on March 6, 2018. An Ipsos poll says earthquakes are the top hazard concern for Vancouver Island residents.

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Sechelt Friday afternoon, with British Columbians feeling tremors as far away as Victoria and Vancouver. Multiple CHEK News viewers reported feeling shaking in cities including Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Victoria, Oak Bay, Fairfield, Saanichton and Vancouver.The next level of those rated under 6.0 will “at most slight damage to well-designed buildings. Can cause major damage to poorly constructed buildings over small regions.”

Serious damage isn’t expected until a magnitude 7.0 to 7.9 is reached, while loss of life isn’t expected until a magnitude 8.0-8.9. A magnitude 9 is the highest on the scale, which Earthquakes Canada calls a “rare great earthquake.
