49ers camp: Top 5 observations start with Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Trey Lance
SANTA CLARA — Here are the top five takeaways Monday from the 49ers’ first fully-padded practice of training camp:Christian McCaffrey is practicing with the pep and passion that makes him this offense’s locksmith, so to speak, or so spoke general manager John Lynch.
San Francisco 49er quarterback Trey Lance cools off on the first day of training camp practice, Tuesday, July 25, 2023, in Santa Clara, Calif. Lance’s best day came Monday after he waited a cycle during 11-on-11 drills before replacing Sam Darnold on second-team reps. Lance opened his 10-of-12 session by connecting with roster hopeful Danny Gray for 20 yards. Lance completed four passes to Ray-Ray McCloud, and a 15-yard throw to Chris Conley fired up George Kittle.
Samuel opened team drills with a carry that he took and spun past linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Samuel later caught three passes from Purdy. “Last year for me, it was a series of unfortunate events,” Armstead said. “My main focus was to get back to a place to help my team win, and I felt I did that down the stretch. … I want to have a dominant year and continue to prove myself.”
