Former San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl champion Russ Francis died in a plane crash over the weekend, his family announced on social media. He was 70 years old.
Multiple sources, including Francis’ brother on social media, confirmed that the victims were Francis and Richard McSpadden, a former commander of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.The NTSB is currently investigating the crash. Francis joined the 49ers in 1982 after spending the first six seasons of his career with the New England Patriots, where he was a three-time Pro Bowl tight end. He briefly retired in 1981, before legendary 49ers head coach Bill Walsh convinced him to sign with San Francisco and resume his playing career.
