The Rams moved the ball but couldn’t capitalize on opportunities.
The Rams were pinned at their own 3-yard line by the 49ers special teams, but it didn’t seem to bother them. Los Angeles proceeded to drive all 97 yards on 18 plays to put the first score of the game on the board with 8:46 left.
The drive was helped by the 49ers going out of their usual four-man rush on two occasions, as defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans sent five rushers at the quarterback. Stafford picked the 49ers apart both times, once on a run and once through the air, for first downs.
Ward was in the end zone when he got the ball, but ran it out and got all the way to the 49ers’ 23-yard line, helping set up the offense for their next drive.San Francisco’s special teams unit has been much maligned throughout the season, but the unit had a standout game in Green Bay to help the 49ers reach this point.
