4 Chinese military hackers indicted in the US for allegedly hacking into Equifax and 'for stealing the sensitive personal information' of nearly 150,000,000 Americans, AG Barr announces.
"This was a deliberate and sweeping intrusion into the private information of the American people," Barr said.
Equifax disclosed the breach in September 2017, setting off a cascade of criticism over its security practices and response to the hack. Then-CEO Richard Smith resigned ahead of congressional hearings as the scandal deepened. The credit-reporting company later agreed to payAccording to the indictment, the hackers gained entry to the Equifax network on March 7, 2017.
Using this vulnerability, the four officers then allegedly uploaded software which allowed them to conduct reconnaissance of Equifax’s web systems and give them access to login credentials.
