There have been countless infamous box office flops over the years, but one movie wears the crown as the lowest-grossing movie of all time.

As Hollywood is full of billion-dollar blockbuster franchises, it may come as a huge surprise to some that the lowest-grossing movie ever held by a film is just $30. Shockingly, that movie was not some obscure 1950s schlockfest, but rather a 2006 feature starring actors who were, at the time, well-known.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT It took a unique set of circumstances for Zyzzyx Road, named for the rural Mojave Desert road on which it takes place, to set the box office bar so catastrophically low. While the writing and acting were certainly closer to a Razzie than an Oscar, the box office return was not purely due to the movie's poor quality.

Zyzzyx Road Is The Lowest Grossing Movie Ever: Why It Only Made $30 Leo Grillo also starred in the film, and he was collaborating with writer/director/producer John Penney to create the film specifically for distribution overseas, . By creating a track record with Zyzzyx Road, they would be able to move forward and create other movies. While they never intended to release the film domestically, they had an obligation to the Screen Actors Guild, which required a U.S.

Do Any Other Movies Come Close To Zyzzyx Road's Box Office Record? While Zyzzyx Road's box office gross seems like it wouldn't have much competition for the lowest ever, there are a number of movies that have grossed under $100. In second place is the British alien horror film Storage 24, which actually did fairly well in ticket sales in the UK and Turkey, but grossed just $72.

Just beyond Storage 24 is The Objective, a sci-fi horror film that grossed just $95 upon its release. From director Daniel Myrick--who was behind the mega-hit The Blair Witch Project--The Objective was in theaters for just over a week before it was pulled. Zyzzyx Road was at least never intended to be a domestic hit, whereas The Objective doesn't have a sticky contract situation to blame its low box office gross on.
