Both actresses were charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services fraud.
Parents of high school students allegedly paid about $25 million total to help their children get admitted to various colleges and universities.Officials from the Justice Department and FBI investigated the case for more than a year. In some cases, Singer allegedly had a third party take, or change answers to, the SAT or ACT exams for students, or Singer would conspire with athletic coaches to fake athletic credentials for non-athletic recruits to help them gain admission to college.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the alleged scheme was discovered through an unrelated case involving an executive being investigated for securities fraud. As part of that investigation, the executive named Singer as being at the center of the alleged admissions scheme.
