Giovanni Intra had an early career making theory-dense post-punk installations in his native New Zealand before co-founding the influential Auckland gallery Teststrip and, after moving to Los Angeles in the ’90s, China Art Objects, which helped foment that city’s Chung King Road gallery scene. But he was at his most transcendent in his writing.

Before he died of an overdose in 2002 at 34, he filed hundreds of sharply tuned dispatches, reviews, and essays, inhabiting a protean voice that vibrated between surrealist wit and pulp fiction. Because of the condensed period within which Intra lived and wrote,reads like a time capsule of the mid-to-late-’90s antipodean and L.A. art worlds, of which he took in as much as possible through his short window.
