Be more intentional to ensure the incident doesn’t happen again.
3. Be grateful for what you have and what you have learned.
While you may have made a mistake, perhaps the situation could have been worse. You could have broken your leg instead of just twisted your ankle. Rather than sent a basic email to the wrong person, you could have mistakenly sent a confidential, internal document to an external person. Recognize your mistake, but don’t be too hard on yourself. Recognizing that it could have been more dire can help you to maintain perspective and appreciate the opportunity to learn from the incident.
Bouncing back from a mistake may not be easy. But learning from the mistake can make it easier to navigate similar, future incidents. You can use the incident to be better. Mistakes can be the best way to make meaningful change and improvements. The poet Nikki Giovanni, “Mistakes are facts of life. It is the response to error that counts.” Put in the work to be better.
Mistakes are not fun, but mistakes can make you better. Slow down. Be more thoughtful with your actions. Take stock in what you have and lessons learned.
