Additionally, in many online environments, especially text-driven ones, individuals cannot see each other. This layer of invisibility provides the courage to express thoughts or engage in actions that might be otherwise suppressed. Users are freed from concerns about physical appearance, social status or non-verbal cues that might otherwise make them anxious about sharing information with others, amplifying the disinhibition effect.
If you are trying to avoid oversharing, become intentional with the content and timing of your posts or comments online. Ask yourself which personal need it fulfills to share this information and how it might impact the mental health of those viewing it. Reflect on the personal boundaries you would like to create and consciously decide who is granted access to your inner world.
