Three people were killed and eight were injured after a suspected drunk driver plowed through a group celebrating the Fourth of July in New York City, according to authorities.
Shortly before 9 p.m., a Ford F-150 came down a street "at a high rate of speed" and went through an intersection, past a stop sign and drove onto the sidewalk and intoon Manhattan's Lower East Side, New York Police Department Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said during a news conference. Maddrey added two people were confirmed dead at the scene. A spokesperson told The Associated Press Friday that a third person was later pronounced dead.First responders said they arrived on the scene within three minutes and 24 seconds to find a pickup truck on top of four victims. FDNY worked alongside NYPD ESU to remove the victims from under the vehicle.
The injured initially included four people who were in critical condition, three who were seriously injured and two with minor injuries, Fire Department Assistant Chief Michael Meyers said.Charges against the driver are pending.
