3 female executives share their experience with gender barriers and how they've overcome them:

“There was a colleague of mine I worked with years ago who never failed to introduce me by saying, ‘This is Sangita, she has four kids.’ He didn’t introduce me by my executive title, comment on my professional accomplishments, or even how many years I had spent at this company. There was another time when I interviewed for a position and left out the number of kids that I had. I was fearful that it would come across like I didn’t have the time or ability to handle the position.

“You can prove your worth through your ambition, drive for results, ability to impact a business and lead a team. Unfortunately, you might have to work a little harder at those things to negate misperceptions.”“Earlier in my career, I encountered some female co-workers who felt the space for women’s leadership or influence was limited, so rather than elevating fellow women and creating more space, they ended up being more competitive.

I decided that I could either walk out angrily, which would have likely felt good in the moment, but would also put us at risk of losing the customer, or I could stay, showing a woman’s unique ability to stay calm in high-stress situations, and take the opportunity to tell the executives who stayed what I had to say. I chose to stay and because of that decision the company is still a long-term Lenovo customer to this day.
