, she figured it was the perfect was to honor her parents, help others who faced similar circumstances, and do something healthy for herself in the process.
“I was never a big runner before,” she said. “I played sports, but I never ran for school or anything like that.” Watson began her training with easy runs, building up her mileage before the trip began. The group’s daily runs would be slow in pace and broken up into sizable chunks, so she felt confident she would be able to handle it.
On June 16, Watson and 27 young adults—who were all between the ages of 19 and 28—began their 49-day running journey from San Francisco all the way to Boston to help raise money and awareness for cancer. During that time, they took shifts running on the road, traveling in vans, sleeping in churches and locker rooms, and volunteeringThe group huddled up every morning to dedicate the miles they were about to run that day to someone affected by cancer.
“We would wake up at around 4:30 a.m. each day,” said Watson. “The first group would start running at around 6 a.m. and the second would drive to the halfway point. We were paired with a different person to run with every day, which was how you got to really know someone. We spent a lot of time as a group, but it was the one-on-one runs that had people opening up.”
